BUT. . . what's your next step?

Don't answer "Mail it!" At least not until you have read-and followed-the list below! Why? Because if you forget even one of the steps listed, you're literally inviting the editor to REJECT your manuscript!

You can start using these steps even before you write the manuscript. Then follow them right up to the sealing of that envelope. Each step is vital to your success. Post this list over your desk. Then check each and every step off as you prepare to submit your manuscript.

In return you'll ensure that your manuscript will both look professional and receive the attention it deserves.

2. Request and Read Guidelines -
    Write for your target magazine's guidelines, then read them and follow them! If you don't care enough to follow what the editor wants, why should the editor bother reading your submission?

3. Never Tell Editors What They Should Print -

    Editors know exactly what they want. Don't send them any more or any less than what the guidelines ask for.

4. Look Like a Professional -
    Learn the basics of professional manuscript formatting (double-spaced, one-side of paper only, etc.). Don't deviate unless it is necessary per a magazine's specific guidelines.

5. Sound Like a Professional -
    Edit your manuscript for spelling, punctuation and grammar. If you aren't comfortable or accomplished in these areas, hire it done. (Check out our web page for our reasonably-priced editorial services.)

6. Cover Yourself -
    If the guidelines ask for a cover letter, include a brief and concise letter. Explain why your manuscript is suited for their specific magazine and briefly include or summarize your publishing credits (if any). Thank them for their time.

7. Play Fair -
    Always state if your manuscript has been printed before (a "reprint"), whether in hard copy or electronically, including where and when. Also state if you are submitting the same story to more than one market at a time (a "simultaneous submission").

8. Keep it Clean -
    Use clear, black print on clean, plain, white paper for the printed manuscript. Letterhead is optional for the cover letter. Stains, smudges, and illegible text tell an editor you don't really care. For electronic submissions (only if the editor accepts them), carefully follow any of the editor's stated requirements for file type and software version and for format.

9. Size it Up -
    A submission under five pages can be folded into thirds and mailed in a #10-size (long) envelope. Don't use a smaller envelope or cram more pages into a #10.

    Mail longer submissions flat in a 9x12 inch envelope. Don't use envelopes larger than 9x12; they are difficult for editors to file and can lead to a misplaced manuscript!

10. Ensure a Response -
    A self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) is required by most editors if you want any response! Use an envelope large enough and with enough postage for the return of your manuscript. Or send a #10 envelope with one first-class stamp and note that "the SASE enclosed is for your response; the manuscript is disposable."

    A self-addressed, stamped postcard (SASP) undermines any chance for the editor to return real feedback, guidelines, or . . . a check!
